Owens has a personal mission to identify modern buildings along the Gulf Coast of Florida, some of which were designed by internationally famous architects of the 50s and 60s, and encourage their owners to appreciate that there is value in restoring them to their original condition.  Attempting to make them look Mediterranean or feel Country Cottage is contrary to their simple character. Although only a few remain completely untouched by updates and renovations over the decades, in those not renovated beyond recognition it is possible to see that the materials used and the arrangement of the spaces of these mid-century homes and buildings were designed for function and with Florida's climate at the forefront. These buildings are bright and airy. Uncovering the layers and restoring them to their former glory can be strikingly elegant. The coolness of the original terrazzo together with their open plan and expansive windows allow cross ventilation which results in keeping the air conditioning off for a good part of the year. Owners will appreciate these buildings are an excellent architectural response to the harsh Florida environment and the look is timeless. An increasingly interested public are finally aware that modern can be comfortable, stylish and warm. It is not necessary to “wallpaper” them into something they are not but as is, they are beautiful, functional buildings.
